The Honorable Charles W. Woodward, Jr.
February 28, 1919 – June 21, 2017
On Wednesday, June 21, 2017, of Rockville, MD. Judge Woodward was born on February 28, 1919, in Poolesville, MD. He attended the Montgomery County public schools and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1941. His postgraduate education, however, was interrupted by the advent of World War II.
In September of 1941, Judge Woodward was inducted into the United States Army, and after completing basic training and Officer Candidate School, the then Lieutenant Woodward was assigned to the 93rd Armored Field Artillery Battalion. Lt. Woodward served with this unit overseas during five major campaigns in Europe from August 21, 1943 to November 13, 1945. On April 11, 1944, Lt. Woodward was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for “heroic service in action” during the Naples Foggia campaign in Italy. In February of 1946, he was honorably discharged from the Army with the rank of Captain.
Upon his return to Maryland, Judge Woodward continued his education and earned a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1948. From that date until his appointment to the District Court, Judge Woodward practiced law as a sole practitioner in Rockville, MD. During this time period, Judge Woodward was active in civic affairs, serving as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from Montgomery County from 1955 to 1963. He was also a member of the Governor’s Commission to Revise the Annotated Code of Maryland and served as a trustee of the Clients’ Security Trust Fund of the Bar of Maryland. He was active in the Montgomery County Bar Association and served as its President in 1971-1972.
Judge Woodward was appointed to the District Court bench in 1974 and was reappointed in 1984. He was a member of the Montgomery County Bar Association for forty years and the Maryland State Bar Association for thirty-eight years.
Beloved husband of the late Mary Patrick Woodward; devoted father of Charles W., III (wife, Carol), Patrick L. (wife, Patricia), Paul J. (wife, Jean) and Philip F. (wife, Elizabeth) Woodward; loving grandfather of Michelle, Charles IV, Carlotta, Lauren, Elise, Nicole, Mark, Molly and Amy; cherished great grandfather of Sage, Shannon, Amelia, George, John, and Maverick.
Family will receive friends at Rockville United Methodist Church, 112 West Montgomery Ave, Rockville, MD on Friday, July 7, 2017 from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm where the service will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 11 am. Interment will be private.
