Philip Tierney
November 13, 1936 - November 3, 2017
The Washington Nationals lost their biggest fan in a trade with God on November 3, 2017. Phil Tierney succumbed to complications from Alzheimer's disease. He was 80 years old.
Phil will be remembered as a man of great erudition. He was a lawyer, a teacher, an environmentalist, a politician, a Grand Night in the Knights of Columbus, and a constant presence in the Catholic community. His faith in the church was unshakable, and he relied on it to get him through troubled times. Phil was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 13, 1936.
At an early age his aunt Clara, a rabid Dodgers fan, took him to Ebbets field and his lifelong love of baseball began. In 1958 Phil graduated from University of Notre Dame which was a constant source of pride for him. He remained an active member of the Notre Dame Alumni Association for the rest of his life. He received a law degree from Catholic University and became a member of the Maryland Bar Association. In the early 70's, he was hired as a civil rights attorney for Montgomery County and presented several of his cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. Later, he became the Hearing Examiner for the Montgomery County Zoning Commission, a post he held for over thirty years. During that time Phil was influential in shaping the landscape of Rockville, Maryland. After retirement Phil moved to Skaneateles, NY with his second wife, Rose Marie. He quickly assimilated into the community and became a strong voice in local politics. He won the Town Supervisor seat with his campaign pledge to save Lake Skaneateles from toxic waste. Phil loved his family, his God, and anything associated with Notre Dame University.
He is survived by his children Susan, Patrick, Mark, Kathy, and Diane; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, November 12 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Pumphrey Funeral Home, 300 W Montgomery Ave., Rockville, MD 20850. A church service will be held Monday, November 13 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church Chapel, 520 Veirs Mill Rd., Rockville, MD 20852.
