The Honorable Gary Everngam

Judge Gary G. Everngam of Silver Spring, MD passed away peacefully at his home on June 27, 2018.
Born in Richmond, VA, Gary is a graduate of Oklahoma State University (B.S., 1969) and University of Baltimore School of Law (J.D., 1975). He served on active duty as a commissioned officer in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1972, including a tour of duty at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Gary was admitted to the Maryland State Bar in 1976 and the District of Columbia Bar and U. S. Supreme Court Bar in 1977. For more than 20 years, he practiced law in the areas of real estate litigation, business law, aviation law, and general practice. Highly regarded as one of Maryland’s leading experts in landlord-tenant law, he coauthored with Douglas M. Bregman the treatise, Landlord-Tenant Law, Practice and Procedure (1983), which is often cited in court decisions. Gary served as an associate judge, District Court of Maryland from 2001 until his retirement in 2017. He was a member of the following bodies: Mental Health, Alcoholism and Addiction Committee, Maryland Judicial Conference, 2004-07; Administrative Judges Committee, District Court of Maryland, 2005-06, 2011-15; Technology Oversight Board, 2005-16; Judicial Council, 2006; and Maryland Electronic Courts Advisory Committee, 2011-17. Additionally, he chaired the Civil Law and Procedure Committee, 2008-10, Maryland Judicial Conference and the Court Technology Committee, Judicial Council 2015- (chair, major project executive steering committee, 2015-17). He also trained and was a mentor to new judges. A computer whiz, he continued in his active retirement to play a leadership role in updating the Maryland Judiciary’s information technology.
Gary was an avid fisherman and, for many years, a private aircraft pilot. Fluent in Spanish, he stayed with a family in Costa Rica periodically over the years to immerse himself in the language.
Gary is survived by Lynette (Lyn), his beloved wife of 49 years, his brother, Judge Douglas Everngam, of Denton, MD, his sister Betsy McLeod of Columbia, South Carolina, three nephews, and a niece.
A celebration of Gary’s life will be held at Montgomery County Circuit Court, 50 Maryland Avenue, Rockville, MD on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 11:00 AM.
