Harold Smith

Harold Smith, 81, of Palm Beach, FL and Chevy Chase, MD passed away on February 12, 2010 following a brief illness. Mr. Smith was born in The Bronx, NY. He was graduated from The George Washington University and The George Washington University School of Law. After several years in private practice, he served as General Counsel of the D.C. Transit Company in Washington, D.C. which was acquired by WMATA in 1973. Later, Mr. Smith became a pioneer in the women's retail clothing industry, founding the T.H. Mandy Company which had stores in Washington, D.C., Virginia, New Jersey and Pennsylvania before being acquired by U.S. Shoe Corp. in 1981. Mr. Smith, an avid golfer, was a long-standing member of the Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, MD, and The Breakers, Palm Beach and Myacoo Country Club in West Palm Beach. Mr. Smith and his wife, Anne, shared a strong interest in the fine arts and have been active benefactors of the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach and supporters of the Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach for many years. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Anne Berkley Smith; his beloved sister, Rita Trachtenberg (David) of Washington, D.C.; his beloved children, Dr. Tina B. West (Edward) of Bethesda MD, Anson B. Smith of Bethesda, MD, and Carter B. Smith of New York and his beloved grandchildren, Amanda West, Jacob West and Ashley West. He is also survived by his beloved stepchildren, Robert Hyman (Deborah Atwood) of Washington, D.C., John Hyman (Kalin) of Brinklow, MD and Andrew Hyman (Melissa) of Boyds, MD and his beloved step-grandchildren, Tucker Hyman, Montana Hyman, Dylan Hyman and Ryan Hyman. Funeral services were held on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at Gawler's Funeral Home in Washington, D.C. Interment was at King David Memorial Gardens, Falls Church, VA. The family received friends at the home of Anne Smith in Chevy Chase, MD immediately following interment.
