This department is responsible for water quality and watersheds management, environmental code enforcement, and solid waste management in the county including refuse and recycling collection. It is also responsible for legislation and programs related to trees, energy, environmental sustainability, and indoor and ambient air quality. It is the primary agency for implementing the County’s stormwater permit including control of volume and pollutants from storm water, stream monitoring, and pollution control. The department coordinates water and sewer policy issues with regional authorities. It handles water and sewer category change applications for private citizens and developers. The Department enforces codes related to noise, air, illegal dumping and water pollution and may write citations. In addition to daily operations, and a large recycling and waste reduction program, the Department’s Solid Waste Division manages the County’s Transfer Station, Recycling Facility, and the Resource Recovery Facility as well as two closed landfills.
