This program provides free legal assistance to low and moderate income clients in resolving tax disputes with the IRS. Cases include controversies with the Earned Income Tax Credit, discrepancies in reported income, non-filer cases, collection matters, and head of household status. Customers must meet income eligibility requirements. Clients can apply over the phone or online, but no walk-in clients are accepted. Each client is matched with a volunteer lawyer who has the appropriate skills and expertise to provide quality representation. In Montgomery County, services for individuals are limited because there are other pro bono organizations that serve the area and MVLS only handles tax problems, back taxes, denial of public benefits, and legal assistance for nonprofit organizations.
