Arthur V. Butler
September 15, 1926 -July 28, 2001

Arthur V. Butler, 75, an attorney for 47 years, passed away on July 28, 2001 at his home in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Mr. Butler was born in New York City and grew up on Long Island. He was graduated from Bayside High School and then served in the Army Air Corps from 1943-1946. He was in the Pilot Training Program until the program was severely cut back as World War II came to an end. After his military service, Mr. Butler obtained his undergraduate degree from American University. Arthur then worked full time as a claims adjuster for GEICO Insurance, then United States Fidelity & Guarantee Company while attending law school at night at American University's Washington College of Law. Mr. Butler received his law degree in 1954 and was thereafter admitted to practice before the Court of Appeals of Maryland and the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. He was later admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of North Carolina in 1985.

Upon completion of law school, Mr. Butler worked for the insurance defense firm of Welch, Daly & Welch. After several years of practice and his sixth child, Mr. Butler went into partnership with Edward Gorman continuing insurance defense work. Following that partnership, Arthur formed his own law practice which ultimately led to a law practice with his son, Vincent Arthur and his daughter, Theresa Marie. In 1990, Mr. Butler moved his permanent residence from Silver Spring, Maryland to Pinehurst, North Carolina while continuing an Of Counsel relationship with Butler & Simmons, P.A. Although Mr. Butler had intended to devote himself to the improvement of his golf and tennis games when moving to Pinehurst, he found himself taking on new cases when clients prevailed upon him to handle their legal matters. Mr. Butler was an extremely skilled and knowledgeable trial attorney and was well respected for his honesty and integrity. He was a long standing member of the Montgomery County, Maryland State, District of Columbia, North Carolina and American Bar Associations.

Mr. Butler was an active parishioner at St. Andrew's Apostle Church in Silver Spring, MD, St. Ann's Catholic Church in Bethany Beach, DE and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pinehurst, NC.

Mr. Butler loved to travel and he did so as often as possible with his wife, Audrey. He especially enjoyed traveling in Spain and Portugal but, in recent years, Mr. & Mrs. Butler also traveled across the United States numerous times in their camper. Mr. & Mrs. Butler celebrated their 50th Anniversary on July 7, 2001 with a big party given by their children in Pinehurst, NC. Mr. Butler is survived by his wife, Audrey Marie Butler, of Pinehurst, NC, his ten children, Vincent Arthur Butler of Burtonsville, MD, Captain Joan Marie Pate of San Diego, CA, Katharine Marie Dillon of Olney, MD, Michael Bryant Butler of Atlanta, GA, Theresa Marie Butler of Silver Spring, MD, Patricia Marie Guin of Raleigh, NC, Lissa Marie Andrakakos of Rockville, MD, Barbara Marie Gaulteros of Pinehurst, NC, Regina Marie Sriraman of Hilton Head, SC and Thomas More Butler of Corona, CA, as well as thirty three (33) grandchildren and one (1) great grandchild
