Andrew L. Sonner Diversity Award
Hall of Fame Nominations Are Now Being Accepted!!!!
Chances are, you know someone who deserves to be in this legal Hall of Fame. This is not a Hall of Fame for the “Most Financially Successful Attorney,” or the “Best Litigator North of the Potomac,” or even a recognition of the “Best 70 Lawyers under 70.” This Hall of Fame is not measured by “rain-making,” trial skills or popularity. It is about recognizing the efforts of those who have quietly opened doors of opportunity for others in our chosen profession.
Montgomery County is a unique legal community that we are proud of. One of the reasons we feel so special about our bar, is the effort of our members to make every practitioner feel welcomed, regardless of racial or cultural heritage. Over the last 30 years, the County has seen a dramatic change in diversity. We have experienced growing pains, but we like to believe that we are making progress. In that vein, on a yearly basis your Bar Foundation acknowledges those who are making an positive impact. The Andrew L. Sonner Excellence in Diversity Award recognizes any individual (attorney or not), law firm, company (legal or not), association or government practice “that champions the Montgomery County Bar Foundation’s goal of encouraging racial and cultural diversity in the hiring, retention and promotion of attorneys and in the elevation of attorneys to leadership position within the Montgomery County legal community.” While that is a mouthful, it is meaningful. This “Hall of Fame” includes some of the true pillars of our bar, such as:
The Honorable Andrew L. Sonner
The Honorable Charles B. Day
Office of the County Attorney for Montgomery County, MD
The Honorable DeLawrence Beard
Shulman, Rogers, Gandal, Pordy & Ecker, P.A.
Office of the State’s Attorney for Montgomery County, MD
Isiah Leggett – County Executive for Montgomery County
Samuel C. Hamilton
Paley, Rothman, Goldstein, Rosenberg, Eig & Cooper, Chtd
It’s perfectly fine to “self-nominate.” We are asking you to look around and let us know of any person, law firm or other entity that meets the qualifications. The deadline for submission of nominations is March 15, 2015. Nominations may be submitted on the Nomination Form to Executive Director, Montgomery County, MD, Bar Foundation, 27 West Jefferson St., Rockville, MD 20850, by fax to 301-217-9327 or by email to Julie@barmont.org.
The winner of the Sonner Award is announced each year at the Annual Meeting of the Bar Association. Here’s to hoping you will help us find the right recipient, and that you will join us in celebration on that special day, Friday, April 17, 2015. Make it happen. Nominate the next member of a very special . . . “Hall of Fame!!”
