Did you know that serving alcohol to minors can now result in both civil liability and jail time?

Speakers:   John McCarthy, Esq., States Attorney for Montgomery County, MD and Tim Maloney, Esq., of Joseph Greenwald and Laake, PA
Moderator:   Carlos Acosta, Esq., Inspector General, Prince George’s County Police Department

In the recent case of Kiriakos v. Phillips, the Maryland Court of Appeals ruled that adults who serve or who even allow minors to consume alcohol on their property, and then allow those minors to leave in a vehicle can in some cases be held liable for any injuries that result. Come learn:  What claims for furnishing alcohol are viable and which are not?  And, where is Maryland law heading in this area?  In addition to civil liability, Maryland lawmakers overwhelmingly approved “Alex and Calvin’s Law,” which went into effect on October 1, 2016, and imposes a maximum one-year jail sentence for adults who provide alcohol to persons under 21, who then injure or kill themselves or others. (The previous penalty was a maximum $5,000 fine.)  Come learn the impact of this new law.
